The ship that achieved enduring fame for her final action with the German Raider, KORMORAN painted by Soren Bruno
The ship, originally christened HMS PHAETON, was bought by the Australian government in 1934 and renamed SYDNEY. The details of her final action are little known except that off Western Australia, near Carnarvon on 19 November 1941, and heading south towards Fremantle, she encountered the German raider, KORMORAN and in the action that followed both ships were lost, SYDNEY losing all hands and only 70 survivors on KORMORAN.
