This is HMS VENUS when a member of the 17th Frigate Squadron (The Dartmouth Training Squadron, DTS) in the early 1960s before the ships were relieved by the more modern Type 12 frigates.  Her funnel carries the insignia of the DTS, the Torch of Learning, and its probable that this painting shows her at the end of one of the DTS' cruises that they would undertake with cadets from BRNC Dartmouth embarked (either to the West Indies, Scandinavian waters or the Mediterranean). as above the open bridge we see proudly displayed a large golden cock, almost certainly the "Cock of the Squadron" won, after fearsome competition with the rest of the squadron, for sports prowess during the cruise.
